Breaking the Cycle of Prejudice: Taking a Closer Look at Discrimination, Prejudice & Stereotypes
Time: 12:00 Noon - Location: Room 144 - Trent Drive Hall Conference Room
On April 5, 1968, the day after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. third grade school teacher Jane Elliot decided to change her lesson plan, and changed the lives of her all white third graders forever. In response to Dr. King's assassination, this teacher in a small, all-white Iowa town devised the controversial and startling "Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes" experiment by dividing her third-grade class based on eye color and giving them a daring lesson in discrimination. Come view an excerpt of the powerful film "A Class Divided" that documents the experience of these third graders and the enduring impact that this simulation had on the student's lives. Judy Seidenstein, Duke's new Director of Diversity & Equity will facilitate a conversation on this "classic" diversity film and explore the impact of The Cycle of Prejudice by identifying the roots and relationships between discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes. Join the dialog and learn what you can do to help break the cycle of prejudice. Brown Bag Lunches Welcome. Space is limited. RSVP to Jean Toomer Friday, January 18, 2008 - 681-6435 or email jean.toomer@duke.edu |

Nanoparticle Superstructures: Self-Assembly and Directed Assembly of
Time: 4:15-5:30pm - Location: 203 Teer
Nicholas A. Kotov, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering University of Michigan Physical properties of nanoparticles and nanowires are currently well understood. The next frontier is conceptualization of larger structures, such as nanoscale assemblies. This talk will discuss the two paradigms in this field: (1) spontaneous assemblies of nanoparticles and (2) quantum mechanical interactions of metallic and semiconductor building blocks in nanoscale assemblies. Anisotropic forces arising between nanocrystalline particles drive the self-assembly behavior of these colloidal particles. Interaction anisotropy between CdTe nanoparticles in solution leads to their spontaneous, template-free organization into free-floating sheets. Electrostatic interactions arising from a dipole moment and a small positive charge combined with directional hydrophobic attraction between the nanoparticles are the driving forces for the self-assembly, which we demonstrate by computer simulation. We found that nanoparticles show conceptual similarities with assembly of proteins. This supposition was recently confirmed by assembly of nanoparticles into spiral systems similar to those found in many biological systems. Electronic interactions in nanoparticle assemblies represent one of the fundamental problems of nanotechnology. Excitons and plasmons are the two most typical excited states of nanostructures, which were shown to produce coupled electronic systems. The concept of these interactions between the Au and CdTe nanoparticles and nanowires will be discussed in terms of quantum mechanical coupling of excited states and unusual optical effects. As such, in presence of dynamic component for excitons theory predicts that emission of coupled excitations in nanowires with variable electronic confinement is stronger, shorter, and blue-shifted. These predictions were confirmed with high degree of accuracy in molecular spring assemblies, where one can reversibly change the distance between the exciton and plasmon. The prepared systems were made protein-sensitive by incorporating antibodies in molecular springs. Modulation of exciton-plasmon interactions can serve as wavelength-based biodetection tool, which can resolve difficulties of quantification of luminescence intensity for complex media and optical pathways. |

"4 Little Girls" Film Screening
Time: 6 p.m. - Location: Schiciano Auditorium
On a Birmingham Sunday morning, September 15, 1963, while attending Sunday school, four little girls were brutally murdered when a bomb ripped through the basement of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Dead were Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Denise McNair (11), Cynthia Wesley (14) and Carole Rosamond Robertson (14). A terrorist attack, orchestrated by Robert "Dynamite Bob" Chambliss, the bombing was one in a series of racial attacks against Black people across the country, but one that had a tremendous impact on America. Told through the eyes of people who were there--survivors, witnesses, defenders and prosecutors, this account records a senseless act whose supporters once thought they would be able to put an end to integration in Birmingham. Instead, it fueled the movement further when it robbed 4 innocent children of their lives and their place in the world. Sponsored by the Black Graduate and Professional Students Association. |

Screen/Society--Cine-East: East Asian Cinema--"The Housemaid" ("Hanyo")
Time: 7:00 pm - Location: East Duke 204B, East Campus
"The Housemaid" ("Hanyo") (Ki-Young Kim, 1960, 90 min. Korea, Korean, Black and White, DVD) A consensus pick as one of the top three Korean films of all time, Kim Ki-young's masterpiece "The Housemaid" occupies a place all its own within Golden Age Korean cinema. A domestic thriller that builds in intensity right up until its startling resolution, the film doubles as a manic tour-de-force and a cutting satire of the aspirations and values of modern society. With inspired editing and a restless camera (not to mention that famous bottle of rat poison), Kim gradually heightens the sense of tension and claustrophobia, creating scenes of startling intensity. The performance he draws out of young actress Lee Eun-shim as the housemaid is unlike anything else shot in Korea in that decade, or indeed ever since. |

Chuck: A Programming Language for Music; Visualizations for Sound Synthesis and Audio Programming
Time: noon until 1pm - Location: D106 LSRC
We present ChucK, a new programming language intended to provide 1) a different approach to express time and parallelism, and 2) a new platform for precise and rapid experimentation of computer audio for composition, performance, and education in CS/Music. The basic tenets of ChucK include a syntax for representing audio flow, a new time-based programming model that allows developers to precisely control time across parallel program components (we call this "strongly-timed"), and facilities to rapidly experiment with audio programs "on-the-fly" (i.e., as they run). A ChucKian approach to "on-the-fly programming" as a new musical performance paradigm is also discussed, which in turn motivates the Audicle: a specialized graphical environment to visualize ChucK programs (as well as the audio programming process) in real-time. In addition, we look at ChucK/Audicle as a primary instrument-building and teaching tool in new computer-mediated ensembles and classrooms such as the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) and (soon) the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk), and some of the software instruments visualizations we've built. This demo-driven presentation chronicles our adventure in designing a new computer music language "from the ground up" and examining the essential (and fun) role visualization has played throughout. All audiences welcome. |
