How have the flexibility, inter-disciplinary programs of study, and range of concentrations in the Economics master's program enriched your experience?
The flexibility of Duke's Master's in Economics program has certainly enriched my experience here. Having the option to take courses in the Fuqua School of Business, for example, has allowed me to acquire a useful set of skills for the private sector that appropriately complement the skills and tools I have acquired from the Economics Department. Whatever your next step is beyond the Master's program, the flexibility of the program allows you to tailor your course of study to best prepare you for whichever career route you plan to pursue. Such a flexible program that encourages inter-disciplinary study is an excellent way to learn how to apply what you learn in economics effectively in a dynamic world where a diverse set factors can comprise a single issue.
      Best advice for prospective students.
Pursuing a Master's in Economics at Duke requires a strong level of commitment and desire to learn. I strongly recommend any prospective student to become comfortable with mathematics and to be ready to approach economic problems techinically and analytically.
How do you plan to use the tools you acquired at Duke in your professional career?
I plan to use my technical and modeling skills that I have acquired at Duke extensively in my professional career. Being able to model a real world scenario and having the technical skills to build a complex and effective model is highly valued and is a key component of this program. Also, many courses require a significant amount of teamwork which has allowed me the opportunity to confront complex problems and work towards a solution with a team and the contribution of my peers. Working with others and in teams will definitely help me in my professional career where seldomly a complex problem is solved alone.
Surviving in a small southern city: quality of life in Durham
Although Durham is small without much to offer, students at Duke like to have a good time as much as possible. Having a car is definitely a plus as it will allow you to go to Chapel Hill which has a much more vibrant night life, and to get around in Durham which is very spread out. The key is to remember why you are here: to receive a high quality education and pursue an advanced degree for your long term goals. While you are here, try to make the most of it.
