Checklist for New Students

Prior to departure from home:

 

  • Offer of admission:  please officially accept the offer of admission from the Graduate School through the link provided in the on-line letter of admission. The process of admission is not complete until you have submitted this form to the Graduate Enrollment Services Office. See:  http://www.gradschool.duke.edu/admissions/review-notification.html for more information.
  • Official matriculation:  You will be issued a Net id and password by the Duke Office of Information Technology (OIT).   If you are an international student, you will receive the Net id once your visa documents have been processed.  This information will come to you with instructions through the mail on or after May 10th of the year you applied.  If you have any questions, please contact OIT at:  http://www.oit.duke.edu/helpdesk/
  •  Personal identification number (PIN):  after receiving your Net id and password, please contact the Graduate Program Administrator at asst_dgs@econ.duke.edu and ask for your PIN which you will need to register for your fall classes. 

 

  •  Registration:  register for your fall classes at http://www.registrar.duke.edu/  Click on “students”, “ACES login”, and then “registration”.  First-year Ph.D. students should register for the following required courses:
    • ECON 301: Microeconomic Analysis I
    • ECON 320: Macroeconomic Analysis I
    • ECON 341: Econometrics I
    • ECON 380.11:  First Year Research
    • ECON 395.98:  Mathematics for Economists
  •  English for International Students (EIS):  international students only, register for EIS Diagnostic Exams at:  http://www.duke.edu/web/eis/ 
  •  Health insurance coverage: You must enter your decision to accept or decline the Graduate School insurance plan through ACES (http://www.registrar.duke.edu/ ) or indicate that you will be covered under another insurance plan.  Health insurance is required by the Graduate School for all graduate students, and if you choose their plan, they will pay for it.

 

Upon arrival at Duke:

 

  • Duke Card: please stop by the office of the Graduate Program Administrator (Soc Sci 138) and obtain a letter which will allow you to obtain your Duke Card earlier than the official start of the semester.  See: http://dukecard.duke.edu/   for more information.
  •  International Students:  register with the International Office, 300 Alexander Avenue, 919-681-VISA.
  •  Attend the following (dates, times, and locations to be determined): 
    • International Student Orientation (for International Students only)
    • Graduate School Orientation
    • Department of Economics Orientation
    • Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) Orientation
