  • Overview

    Andrew Sweeting is a professor of economics at Duke University. Before joining the Duke faculty in 2007, he was a professor of economics at Northwestern University from 2004-07. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 and attended the University of Oxford to earn his B.A. and M.Phil. When completing his doctorate, he also worked as a research assistant for Glenn Ellison and Paul Joskow. While in London, he was an economic consultant for Lexecon Ltd., specializing in antitrust and damages litigation. Along with his teaching specializations, Professor Sweeney is interested in exploring the areas of energy markets, merger remedies, media ownership regulation, dynamics of product differentiation, and pricing dynamics and mechanism choice in perishable goods markets. He has published a number of papers and articles, including his recent work on, “The Strategic Timing of Radio Commercials: An Empirical Analysis Using Multiple Equilibria.” One of his papers, “Market power in the England and Wales Wholesale Electricity Market,” was the winner of the Austin Robinson Memorial Prize for Best Paper published within five years of Ph.D. His writings have appeared in such prestigious academic journals as the RAND Journal of Economics, Econometrica, the Journal of economics and Management Strategy, and the Economic Journal. Along with publishing his work, Professor Sweeney has presented his papers throughout the world. He was recently invited to speak at the Quantitative Marketing and Economics Conference, the federal Trade Commission Applied Microeconomics Conference, the London School of Economics, and more. He has also spoken at a number of universities across the country, including Virginia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania State, Brown, Yale, Duke, and many others. Professor Sweeney has received numerous honors in acknowledgement of his success as a scholar and professor. He recently earned the National Bureau of Economic Research Faculty research fellow, and was awarded a National Association of Broadcasters research study grant. During his studies, he earned the Kennedy Memorial Trust Scholarship, the Proxime Accessit for the written examinations, and the Gladstone in PPE. Along with his teaching and research responsibilities, Professor Sweeney has led a number of graduate student committees. For his excellence as an advisor, he received the Robert M. Solow Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Research and Teaching in 2004. He is also currently a member of the Academic Panel of the UK Competition Commission and of the American Economics Association and the Royal Economic Society.

  • Research Description

    Professor Sweeting's research has looked at a number of applied topics in empirical industrial organization and antitrust, including the effects of mergers in media and retail industries, the role of product repositioning in ameliorating the effects of mergers, market power in energy markets and the pricing and design of markets for perishable goods. He is also active in the design of appropriate empirical methods for estimating static games with multiple equilibria, entry models with selection and static and dynamic games with unobserved heterogeneity.
