The LEHD employer-data can be matched to components of the Economic Census using the Business Register Bridge (BRB). The finest level of detail available in the BRB is the firm by state, county, and industry. Though the Bridge cannot provide a unique one-to-one match of establishments (units within the firm) between LEHD and the Economic Census, variables in Census’s Business Register (BR), such as employment and sales, can be used to find a best match. The match between firms in Census files and LEHD is one-to-one. Suggestions on how to find the best match on the establishment level can be found in the documentation file.
The BRB contains unique firm-identifiers that are common to Census and LEHD (EINs), 4-digit Standard Industry Codes (SIC), year, and geographic information. The files also contain flags indicating if the business unit is observed in the Census Business Register, LEHD files, or both.
