Advising

Major Declaration

Trinity students must declare their major by the end of their fourth semester at Duke, following the declaration guidelines established by the Academic Advising Center. Engineering students should consult with their faculty advisor for information on declaring an economics major or minor.

New Major Orientation

Prior to the pre-registration period (October + March), and after we receive your name from the Academic Advising Center, we will send you a welcome e-mail from the economics department. In that e-mail, you will be given information about that term's orientation dates with the Director of Undergraduate Studies. In Orientation the basic elements of the major will be discussed, as will career strategies and other information relevant to those seeking an economics major. It is mandatory that you attend one of these sessions as they serve as the gateway into the Economics Advising System and your only opportunity to select a Faculty Mentor. Students who are on study away from Duke should for information on what was covered by the DUS, and to select a Faculty Mentor.

Requirements Advising & Registration Eligibility

Once you have attended New Major Orientation, you are eligible for advising in the EcoTeach Center. During pre-registration each term, EcoTeach will offer 35-40 hours of open advising during which any eligible student can come to EcoTeach without an appointment, for advising by trained graduate student advisors. As part of this process, students will receive a personalized report on their progress in the major or minor (updated each term) as well as be cleared by the advisor to register through ACES. While registration clearance is for economics first majors only, we encourage all majors and minors to come by for their progress report. More information on registration can be found in the courses section.

General Advising from a Faculty Mentor

For matters that do not pertain to requirements advising or to the technical/administrative aspects of pursuing an economics major, students are encouraged to consult with their Faculty Mentor in the Economics Department. Such a mentor is assigned to each economics first major after he/she has attended New Major Orientation. Second majors and minors are not automatically assigned a Faculty Mentor, but may request one by submitting an mentor request form to the EcoTeach Center. For a list of available Undergraduate Faculty Mentors and their research interests, click here. The mentor information will be available through student ACES accounts, within about one month after the advising period. Students should feel free to contact their mentor via e-mail for an appointment at any time during the academic year concerning such matters as career advice, questions about graduate school, etc. For more technical questions regarding requirements for the major and for graduation, we ask that you come to the EcoTeach Center.

Graduation Certification

The EcoTeach Center is responsible for reporting to the Deans of Trinity College and the School of Engineering the status of economics students' fulfillment of degree requirements. Progress Reports issued during open advising hours each term are a graduating student's best resource for determining their requirements status in regard to the economics major or minor. The EcoTeach Center will also contact graduating seniors via email regarding clearance of economics degree requirements. Students will first be contacted prior to the end of the drop/add period of their final semester at Duke (e.g. spring graduates will receive the first email after fall grades have posted and by the first day of spring classes). A second email serving as final notification will be sent about six weeks after the drop/add period. For questions related to graduation certifications, please email .

University Requirements

For information on satisfaction of University requirements, students should consult their University Advisement Report through their Student ACES account, or contact the Academic Dean for their first major. Trinity students will also find helpful "T-reqs," a site covering the academic policies and procedures of the College. Students in the School of Engineering should contact Dean Constance Simmons.
