Total burden of illness = direct cost + indirect cost + intangible cost

• Direct cost: medical services; drugs; personal care, etc.
• Indirect cost: lost market production; lost household production
• Intangible cost: pain and suffering; loss of consortium; loss of enjoyment of life, etc.

Social Objective: Minimize Total Cost = Cost of Prevention + Direct/Indirect/Intangible Cost
