Frequently Asked Questions: New Econometrics Sequence

Why is the econometrics requirement changing?

The econometrics component of the economics core has been improved to better serve our students. Designed as a two-semester integrated sequence, ECON 104D and 204D are required core classes that provide economics majors with the tools to be sophisticated consumers and producers of state-of-the-art empirical evidence, skills that are critical for understanding a wide array of economic relationships. The skills learned in the classes are very broadly applicable and will be useful not only for economic applications but also for empirical studies in other disciplines as well as in advanced classes in other departments. ECON 104D should be taken first because it lays the foundation for ECON 204D. We strongly encourage taking the classes as early as possible as the knowledge acquired in these classes will be used in subsequent classes that include empirical content including many of the field electives in the economics major. These core econometrics classes in combination with the application of modern empirical methods in field electives will lay the foundation for writing a senior thesis.

How does it affect me based on my matriculation year?

Year of Matriculation Permitted Courses

Can I still take ECON 208 in Summer of 2020?

Yes. This will be the final time this course is offered, and it will still count toward the major.

Can I still take STA 111 in Summer of 2020?

Yes. This will be the final time this course is offered, and it will still count toward the major.

If I have credit for STA 111, can I take ECON 204?

Yes. If you have credit for this course or another currently-approved statistics course but have not yet taken ECON 208, then you can take ECON 204. You may have to get a permission number from EcoTeach, however.

I haven’t taken any stats courses yet. Will I be able to use other Statistics courses instead of ECON 104 to satisfy the prerequisites for ECON 204?

The department introduced Econ 104 for two reasons. First, Econ 104 and 204 are designed as an integrated sequence and so Econ 204 builds on Econ 104. Second, we intentionally designed 104 to best serve students who go on to take 204. In particular, it guarantees that students taking 204 will have the conceptual understanding of methods that is necessary to succeed in 204 in a way that is not possible with other potential pre-requisite courses.

As a result, it is not possible to substitute other classes for Econ 104 with one exception: we believe that students who have passed Stat 432 will have the appropriate preparation for Econ 204. Therefore, at this time, Stat 432 can be used as a pre-requisite for Econ 204.

I am planning on double-majoring in Statistics and Economics. Can I use my Stats courses to satisfy the ECON 104 requirement?

Yes, Stat 432 can be used as your econ major requirement and as a pre-requisite for Econ 204

When should I take ECON 104?

Basically, as soon as you have completed the math prerequisite. Ideally, students should complete ECON 204 by the end of their sophomore year, so they should take ECON 104 sooner.

Can I transfer in credit for ECON 104 or 204 from another institution?

No.

Is there a deadline for taking ECON 104?

No, but there’s a deadline for taking ECON 204, and ECON 104 is a prerequisite. See below.

Is there a deadline for taking ECON 204?

Yes, students must complete ECON 204 by the end of their junior year, or get DUS permission to take it later. Ideally, students should complete ECON 204 by the end of sophomore year.
