Paul Pecorino, Ph.D. 1990

Hayes Professor of Economics, University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa, AL

1990 Ph.D., Economics; certificate in Political Economy

How has being an Economics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"You need the Ph.D. to be a tenure track researcher in academia! I received strong training at Duke and this has enabled a productive research career."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Economics programs?

"What you know and who you know both matter. Obviously, without the needed skill set, work ethic and ambition, you will not go far as an academic. The profession is clubby, more so than when I graduated in 1990. This may not be fair, but that is the way it is. Thus, professional networking is also extremely important."
