The winners from the 2012 Deutsche Game Show were asked why they wanted to participate in this competition and how they prepared. Here are some of their answers:

Why did you decide to participate in the Deutsche Game Show?

“I decided to participate in the game show because I thought it would be a valuable experience. As a junior, with internship recruiting and interviews coming up soon, I wanted to learn as much as I could by taking part in the finance competitions that are offered in the fall.”

“I felt like this competition, which relied mainly on article-based questions, would be more approachable for someone like me, without an extensive finance background.”

Had you heard about the game show before?

“Yes, I heard about it last year. All I heard were good experiences from my friends who competed.”

How did you prepare?

“We split up the articles into 4 groups and thoroughly read the articles [for which] we were responsible.”

“I just read through all the assigned articles and kept up with the Wall Street Journal every day.”

What advice can you offer to students who want to do the show next year?

“Make sure you specialize. No one person should need to read all the articles. It makes it inefficient. Also, make sure you keep up with general news in the markets/general finance.”

“Start preparing ahead of time, because there is a lot of reading material and cramming it all in right before the day of the competition is not a good idea. Additionally, taking finance courses at Duke—especially Intermediate Finance—is very helpful for this competition.”

Did you find the competition useful?

“I definitely found the competition useful. I learned a lot and I've begun following the subtopics I covered a lot more closely.”

“It was extremely useful because all of the reading material and newspaper articles contained information that was very helpful and relevant for students who are thinking of pursuing a career in finance.”

“The competition was absolutely critical in that it equipped me with a sufficient amount of interview preparation material. The Deutsche Game Show is perfect for students who are pursuing a Sales & Trading (S&T) career. Even if you don't win, the competition really prepares you for interviews since you get a good grasp on major market headwinds through all the readings. I decided to participate because I'm pursuing S&T and wanted to prepare for interviews.”
