Duke 8th in Latest U.S. News Ranking

Duke placed eighth in the latest annual rankings by U.S. News & World Report magazine of national universities that offer doctoral degrees. Last year Duke was ranked in a tie for eighth.

In its latest rankings, released overnight on Tuesday, U.S. News also placed Duke seventh in a category called "Great Schools at Great Prices," for which the magazine compares a school's academic quality with the net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. In the previous year’s rankings, Duke was ranked 13th in that category.

Duke also finished in a tie for 10th in a category that ranks a school’s “strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.”

In a new category, called Most Innovative Schools, Duke placed seventh. The magazine said the rankings in this category are based on “the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities.”

In addition, Duke finished in a tie for eighth among national universities in a list of “high school counselors’ top college picks,” based on a national survey of high school guidance counselors.

The magazine also ranked Duke tied for No. 12 among top national universities for “valuing economic differences,” as measured by the percentage of undergraduates receiving federal Pell grants.
