Duke Econ vs. UNC Econ Basketball Championship Game

The Department of Economics at Duke will take on their fierce rivals, UNC's Department of Economics, in a major basketball event. The game will be held this Thursday, August 16, at 4:00 PM in UNC's Woollen Gymnasium in Chapel Hill.

"This may be the greatest match-up ever in economics sports history," said fourth year Ph.D. student Joe Mazur. "It's the ultra game-of-the-century challenge for the championship of everything - including economics."

Some concern has been expressed that the referees will be undergraduate economics majors at UNC, which may work against the "solid" Blue Devil team. However, Mazur expressed his confidence in a win for Duke.

The UNC econ-basketball squad seem equally positive that the outcome will favor them.

"We look forward to continuing our proud tradition of dominating Duke University in all things, especially basketball," said UNC star Anthony Diercks.

Duke power Ph.D. players Eduardo Jardim and Tyler Ransom have other ideas. Jardim plans a day of rest on Wednesday to gear up for the game and bring home victory.

Ransom is planning on having some serious fun on game day and perhaps even contribute to a Duke triumph.

"If I can pull an Austin Rivers and hit a game-winning 3, that'll be icing on the cake," he said.

The Blue Devils revealed today that they do have a serious weapon on their side.

"I'm bringing my 18-month old daughter along as a cheerleader," explained Duke student Jared Ashworth. "The goal is to blind the UNC economists with cuteness, then drive past them for an easy lay-up."

All are welcome to attend the game and cheer on the Blue Devil team, comprised mostly of graduate students.
