For 15 rising juniors, meeting alumni was the highlight of the first Duke in London: Finance program. For six weeks, students took two economics courses, visited select corporations, and interacted with London-based Duke alumni who work in financial markets.
“We had a guest lecturer almost every class from all different areas of finance,” said Nick Yam, an economics major with a finance concentration. “These professionals provided career advice and information about current events that shape the industry."
Participants also visited various financial institutions, including Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, TDR Capital, and Citi. During these visits students saw what they learned in the classroom put to practical use.
While most of the participants were economics majors, students from other disciplines also attended.
“Duke in London was the best learning experience of my life,” said Kitt Miller, who majors in mechanical engineering. “It gave me direction in what to pursue as a career. The networking opportunities provided by the visits and guest lecturers were unbelievable and perhaps the most defining aspect of the program.”
Professors Emma Rasiel and Aino Levonmaa led this year's program, which will be held again next summer.
“The first summer of the Duke in London program was fantastic,” said Professor Levonmaa. “It laid a great foundation for future years.”
Applications for next year’s program will become available in late fall.
