At the request of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a new committee has been created by Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences to examine Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals. Chaired by Professor Frank Sloan, the group is charged with evaluating the accuracy of the geographic adjustment factors used by Medicare. The committee held their second meeting this week in Washington, D.C.
