Marija Vukotić, now a professor in the UK, graduated  in 2010 with a doctorate in economics from Duke. In this interview, she shares her graduate school experience, explains her current research, and gives practical advice for both current and prospective students.

Tell us about your background prior to Duke.
I did my undergraduate studies in economics at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. After graduating, for one year I worked for the G17 Research Institute, in the Department for Macroeconomic Studies. At that time, the Institute was advocating for major economic reforms that Serbia greatly needed. Hence, I had the opportunity to participate in various interesting projects, where I could apply some of my theoretical knowledge and better understand how things were done in practice. Moreover, the Institute was also organizing various seminars and short topical courses, so it was the opportunity to learn new things and stay in touch with the dominant research questions.
