How has being an Economics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The part of my Economics degree which shaped me the most was my Independent Study. The hard skills in terms of research and data analysis have served me well as a consultant and in my resume as I think about the opportunities available to me in future careers. Additionally, and most relevant, is the stimulus it gave me to search out career opportunities which center on problem solving, research, learning, and knowledge accumulation. Specifically, it prompted me to pursue wine studies outside of my day job so that both my personal and eventually career could continue down the path of learning and research."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Economics programs?

"First, for undergrads, be thoughtful about the elective classes you take - they can allow you to dig deep into certain interests, expand knowledge of subjects you wouldn't otherwise have pursued, or meet professors that will serve as mentors. Second, in that same vein, if you have the opportunity for an Independent Study, take it. Find a professor with whom you connect and can serve to open your mind to new skills, research, and interests."
