Advising

Open Advising

Once students have completed New Major Orientation on Canvas, they are eligible for advising in the EcoTeach Center. EcoTeach handles the nuts and bolts of advising, from anything related to major, minor, and concentration requirements to registration and graduation. A two-week open advising period is held in EcoTeach every semester — usually beginning the week of registration — during which students meet with specially trained academic advisors to review their progress in the major or minor and receive permission to register for courses in the upcoming semester. As part of this process, students will receive a personalized report on their progress in the major or minor (updated each term).

All first majors must come to open advising every semester. Second majors and minors should attend at least once a year to make sure they are on track with degree requirements.

Mentors for Majors

Once they have formally declared, Economics majors will be contacted by the DUSA to match you with a faculty mentor. Explore the options within economics here.  The mentor assignment will be made available through the student DukeHub accounts about one month after the advising period. For matters that do not pertain to course requirements or technical/administrative aspects of pursuing an economic degree (such as career advice and questions about graduate school), students should feel free to contact their mentors via email for an appointment at any time during the academic year.

Students may also consult with the director of undergraduate studies (DUS) or associate director of undergraduate studies (ADUS). The DUS and ADUS offer office hours each term for walk-ins, or you may schedule an appointment by contacting them via email.
