Matthew R. Gordon, MD, B.A. 2006

Orthopedic Surgeon, Adult Reconstruction, Tufts Medical Center — Boston, MA

2006 Major: Economics; minor in Chemistry

How has being an Economics graduate from Duke helped shape your professional success?

"A background in economics has been invaluable in seeing various issues in medicine through a bit of a different lens than having a more traditional degree in the sciences. However, my economics background in no way put me behind my peers in medical school because Duke’s premedical track was so strong."

What advice would you give students in Economics?

"Take advantage of opportunities to study with your classmates. Some of my most valuable experiences came while studying or working on projects with my classmates. Every person has a unique way of thinking about concepts and solving problems. Engage your classmates in discussion because it will help deepen your own understanding."
