How has being an Economics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The most important skillset I gained at Duke is how to write well, and - just as importantly - to enjoy writing. As a professional researcher/writer for the past 19 years, the ability to get a bona fide liberal arts education - yes, including plenty of humanities classes outside the Economics major - was foundational to my career."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Economics programs?

"1. Do NOT automatically chase the highest paycheck that may be offered. 2. Think about how you genuinely want to spend the working day, because being miserable is NOT worth any job. 3. Avoid the relentless revolving door - once committed to a professional role, spend at least 3 years doing it before looking for something else."
