How has being an Economics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I graduated from Duke in 1992 and immediately went to the University of Texas School of Law. I worked in a law firm for just 18 months and have been in business ever since. I believe that my Economics degree helped me think about business in a way that considers motivations of others, as I look for solutions to provide to others. I also believe my Economics degree has helped me with "the long game" as I have put long-term business strategies into place and watched them successfully unfold. I now own several multi-million dollar businesses that I created, and I have just under 1,000 employees."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Economics programs?

"Don't overlook the practical. Get a relevant internship at a business that interests you. Learn psychology and communication as you will be dealing with people in nearly every path you choose going forward. Don't forget your hobbies, and never stop physical movement (e.g., mountain biking, swimming, etc.)."
